Studio Visit: Jasper Morrison

Join us as we visit the international designer Jasper Morrison at his studio in Shoreditch, East London. Once a dilapidated Victorian stable building, the studio has been meticulously renovated and now serves as the backdrop for Morrison's creative endeavors.

Discrete objects are more successful in building a good atmosphere than an eye-catching one.

Jasper Morrison

Morrison aimed to create a place with a relaxing, homely atmosphere - a quiet, inner space, not overly designed but obviously different. Adjacent to the studio, a small shop sells products designed by Jasper Morrison alongside a collection of items he has curated for public sale. This shop ranks among the top ten design stores in the UK. The studio's repertoire spans various design services, from tableware and kitchen products to furniture, lighting, electronics, and appliance design.

Morrison broke through in the early '80s with his experimental designs. Since then, he has established himself as a leading minimalist furniture and product designer, known for creating simple and practical designs where function always precedes form. His design philosophy also stands out for its high degree of originality, and Morrison has a particular fondness for materials like fiberglass, textiles, and aluminum. In his collaboration with Fredericia, Morrison draws inspiration from the company's strong traditions in high-quality wood craftsmanship. He has successfully created designs introducing a fresh and modern approach to wooden furniture, where elegance meets functionality in every piece. Among his creations are the Pon tables and Taro tables.

A celebration of timeless and functional design

The British designer strives to create functional objects that seamlessly integrate into daily life and are designed to last and be used for many years. He defines this approach as “Super Normal”, a philosophy at the heart of all his creations. In 2006, Jasper Morrison and Japanese industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa brought this design approach to life with an exhibition of the same name in Japan.

Super Normal responds to the modern design world, characterized by excessive products that lack meaningful impact and only seek attention. Together, Morrison and Fukasawa selected about 200 everyday items that represent the essence of Super Normal, aiming to highlight the value of discreet and functional design. The exhibition evolved into a traveling exhibition, later showcased in London and Milan.
