Børge Mogensen’s iconic J39 launches in artistic colours
Inspired by Japanese interiors and Danish avant-garde art in Mogensen’s home, the popular wooden chair, which has just been awarded the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, is launched in dark blue and vintage red – a colour that played a significant role in the designer’s universe throughout his lifetime.
Børge Mogensen’s J39 chair is an icon that reflects the Danish designer’s philosophy of creating durable designs made to be used for generations. The J39 chair stands as one of the strongest manifestations of Mogensen’s unmatched ability to create timeless furniture that, with its natural materials and ageless expression, succeeds in staying current across times, generations and cultures.
For a lifetime, the J39 has won the hearts of design enthusiasts worldwide with its simple beauty and informal design language. In 2022, the chair celebrated 75 years in continuous production, attesting to its status and popularity over the years. This spring saw the introduction of new colour variants: Pebble grey, Khaki green and Beech Vintage lacquered, inspired by Børge Mogensen’s characterful country house and studio in Lynderup by the Limfjord. The two new colours are also inspired by Børge Mogensen’s affinity for a particular red and blue.
Heritage Red and Indigo Blue
Throughout his life as a designer, Mogensen continually returned to the terracotta red and the cool dark blue colours. Both in collaborations with Lis Ahlmann, such as the Cotil fabric for the Spoke-Back Sofa, in extension leaves for the tables he designed, and in his many furniture exhibitions, where for several years he had red Koinobori, Japanese paper fish, hung up against his designs. Even in his own home, which was otherwise restricted to a relatively neutral palette, Mogensen had subtle blue and red references, such as a gift from Kaare Klint in the form of a unique Japanese-inspired rice paper lamp with a red circle and the artworks created by friend and artist Albert Mertz.
